About
A welcoming space in Thimphu.
Dabtong House is a non-profit subsidiary of Chiba Tech, operating from Lower Motithang in Thimphu, Bhutan. We are the in-country home for a small set of long-running projects that thread Bhutan and Japan together.
What our name means
Dabtong is the Dzongkha word for a thousand petals. House is the place where people are welcomed in. The logo borrows from two traditions at once — the Japanese ichimatsu checker pattern and the geometric ornaments woven into Bhutanese textiles and architecture. Many small squares that, together, make a flower.
Dabtong: a thousand petals. House: a welcoming space, a community.
How we fit
Dabtong House is the operational and legal vehicle in Bhutan for Chiba Tech. We hold the in-country bank account, sponsor work visas for staff, and provide the legal presence that allows Chiba Tech to operate as a partner inside the country.
We are not a funder. Funding for the initiatives we support flows through Chiba Tech and its partners — Google, Netflix, Microsoft, JAXA, and the broader research community around the MIT Center for Bits and Atoms. Dabtong House coordinates, hosts, and makes things happen on the ground.
